This Spanish play of the XVIIth century is based on the mischievous, prankish life of the Third Duke of Osuna, D. Pedro Tellez. Gir6n, a well-known historical figure in Andalucia. A nobleman, exiled from Sevilla and imprisoned in the castle of Alcala de Guadaira, D. Pedro escapes to join the forces of Archduke Albert, in Flanders. He gathers some followers on his trip to Flanders, as he manages to get in and out of trouble and, finally, winning the admiration of the King of France for his patriotism, courage and valor.
The author of this play, D. Crist6bal de Monroy y Silva, lived from 1612 to 1649 in Alcala de Guadaira, near Sevilla. He was a contemporary of Lope de Vega and Calderon de la Barca, two of the greatest playwrights of the century, in Spain; thusly, his works-as those of many other good writers- were not given the attention that they should have garnered at that time. All had their audiences who applauded when they enjoyed the play or whistled when they disliked it. Everyone had his merits and imperfections. The academic world must incite more research on these forgotten authors, encourage a thorough study of their literary work. Hay que sacarlos de las tinieblasy darles la luz que merecen . It is only in recent years, with intensive research done by professor Barroca, that Monroy’s works have come to light.
