St. Leonard was born in 1676 at Port Maurice, near Genoa. He went to Rome to study, and there took on the Franciscan habit at the friary of St. Bonaventure. He also built retreat houses for his order, and founded pious confraternities in Rome to spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart and perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. "My Jesus, mercy!" was the prayer always upon his lips.
