Little kittens, whose lives are all play, follow the older kittens up a tree to the barn roof to play. Going up was easy but when it was time to come down, the tiny kittens see only a very steep descent to the ground with nothing but their tiny claws to hold on to the bark of the tree. Mommy cat comes to the rescue and helps her babies back to safety.
This is a true story. One of our barn cats had a litter of six. One day, when they were about eight weeks old, I came upon the kittens up on the barn roof, afraid to come down. I climbed the tree as high as possible and slapped the tree trunk with my hand while verbally encouraging the kittens to come down. A couple of them did venture down on their own but the others would not even try. Suddenly, mommy Lizzy-Puff was at my feet, assessing the situation. I got down, backed away and watched as Lizzy-Puff climbed up the tree and got every kitten safely down to the ground. I thought it was an exceptional event and worthy of a story. Lizzy-Puff and all the kittens are real and live today at Keller Farms.
