Despite all the advances of our modern culture and society our view of divorce and the people and families who go through divorce is still very often old fashioned and unenlightened. We as a culture still, subtly or not so subtly, place a negative mark next to the individuals and the children who have been through divorce, characterizing them as broken. It is a truth that we are quick to rush people down the aisle into marriage, but not so keen on supporting or helping when the marriage has come to be more like a slow death rather than a lifegiving foundation to the lives of the people involved.

Whole, functioning couples don’t divorce. The couples who decide to end their marriages and divorce do so precisely because the marriage is no longer a place that is functioning well and creating a home life where the people can thrive. The truly ironic thing here is that most people who divorce do so, not seeking to break something in their lives, but in fact to restore wholeness to their lives and subsequently the lives of their children. Couples who divorce are seeking to become whole because living in the marriage is breaking them.
