The Northport Stories chronicles the lives, loves, and struggles of residents of the small, fictional Oregon coast town of Northport. Evans' stories are skilled, wry, and sometimes bitterly ironic glimpses into the lives of people who change, and are changed by, the rugged weather, geography, and social life of the coastal Pacific Northwest. Evan's original self-published collection Northport: Stories of the Coast was a finalist for a 1999 Oregon Book Award, but the book fell out of print not long afterward. Restored and reissued here, with a cover featuring photos by Evans and an introduction by Oregon writer Dan DeWeese, The Northport Stories now not only showcases the desires and frustrations of its varied characters, but also captures a late-twentieth-century way of life in which solitude and freedom were valued as much as connection.
