Genevieve Lamar, daughter of a Viscount, rejects all the titled, wealthy men on her mother’s list as undesirables, which makes her mother furious. She pounces on an invitation from France, and hustles Genevieve to the magnificent Chateau de Chambord to find a man.

Lord Ashby, an admirer of Genevieve’s, escorts them there, only to find a familiar Londoner, Sir Pomeroy Chancet, lying in wait for her. Genevieve dodges men in the immense chateau, for she fears being forced to accept a proposal from someone she does not love.

A Frenchman, Armand de Villebon, arrives at the chateau on an espionage mission, and entrusts Genevieve to help him with a dramatic plan. During the uproar that ensues, the three men engage in a clash of schemes and wills. Genevieve is romantically wooed by all of them in their unique and startling ways.
