Lt.Hermann was injured; his arm, collarbone and four ribs had been shattered against the dive control bulkhead. He was trying to push himself up to a kneeling position through the pain fogging his head when a massive sonar ping hit the hull and reverberated through everything. For an instant, everyone froze. It seemed as if all sound had vanished from the control room except for the shrill blaring of the klaxon horn. Men throughout the sub were shouting in pain over its incessant wail as scalding water sprayed in from broken pipes running along the ceiling. The Kapitaen raised himself up and looked over at Becker who was wiping the blood running from a gash in his forehead where his head had slammed into a bulkhead. "Becker, shut off that damned horn now! That sound is in the water! And get a bandage on your head!" Becker looked at Kapitaen Heinrich with incredulous eyes before yelling, "Captain... look around you! We are sinking! What matter blood or sound now? We are ALL going to die!"
