Preparing traditional Mexican tamales gives Susy the opportunity to recount memories of her childhood from the family excursions to visit her abuelita Amelia-memories of flavors and aromas found in a traditional Mexican kitchen.

During the last days of December Susy will need to face the past. Her neighbors will discover a secret, and the mystery of the sports car will be revealed.

Tamales with Friends is a novella that transports the reader via Susy's cooking from the town of San Pedro on the California coast, where the ladies of Sea Foam Lane live, to the house of Amelia Guzman in central Mexico where some of Susy's happiest memories took place.
