In Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, when Ebenezer Scrooge cried out to his partner: But you were always a good man of business, Jacob! Marley’s ghost then lamented: The common welfare was my business and mercy, charity, forbearance, and benevolence were all my business! Mankind was my business, while the dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business! Then flowed remorse for missed opportunities and lost potential: At this time of the rolling year, the spectre grieved, I suffer most. Why did I walk thru crowds of fellow beings with my eyes turned down and never raise them to the blessed Star which led the Wise Men to a poor abode? Were there no poor homes to which its light would have conducted me? As we assist others to make the journey to Christ, may we make small contributions to the Christmas season. As Dickens wrote of Scrooge, may it be said of us that we knew how to keep Christmas well. And so, as Tiny Tim prayed: God Bless Us, Every One!
