OSI Reference Model

Welcome to our book on the OSI model! In this book, we will explore the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, which is a conceptual framework for network communication. The OSI model provides a standard for communication between different systems by breaking down the communication process into seven layers. As two authors with experience in networking, we have come to appreciate the importance of the OSI model in understanding how networks operate. This book is intended for anyone interested in networking, from students learning about networking for the first time to professionals who need a refresher on the OSI model. In this book, we will explore each layer of the OSI model in detail, discussing its purpose and the protocols that operate at that layer. We will also examine how the layers interact with each other to facilitate communication between devices on a network. We will start by discussing the physical layer, which deals with the physical aspects of transmitting data across a network, such as the cables, connectors, and other hardware used in network communication. We will then move on to the data link layer, which is responsible for transmitting data between two directly connected devices.
