Andrew Johnson is generally only remembered as the first President to be impeached or as the person who came after Abraham Lincoln. Johnson’s climb to the highest post in the land, however, came after a long career in both state and national public service. His loyalty to the Union brought him to the attention of Lincoln, who, in 1964, place on the National Unity ticket as his running mate. When Lincoln was sworn in for his second term on March 20, 1865, few could have possibly known that in less than a month, Johnson would be President. His battles with the Radical Republicans led to him impeachment in 1868, and by just one vote, he won the Senate trial to remain in office. Come along as historian Keith Pruitt introduces the reader to the man, Andrew Johnson.
