When the electricity went off, we figured it wouldn’t be for long. Prison is a separate reality from the outside - we’re largely detached from what goes on out there. So at first we thought the problems, whatever they were, wouldn’t affect us much, we were wrong. That first day they came around and tossed bag lunches into the cells; all the guards were ashen-faced and wouldn’t tell us anything. The radio and TV stations were off the air; battery-powered radios and TV’s got nothing but static. The next day nobody showed up for work - no guards, medical staff, maintenance - nobody. By the third day we realized if we were going to survive, it was on us. Munie - immune; one who is immune. Mutie - mutated; mutant.
