The aim of this book is to provde coverage of films made during the 1950s dealing with the Second World War. There are a number of sub-genres in the films, such as those dealing with prisoner of war camps (like The Wooden Horse, Albert RN, Stalag 17, The Colditz Story, Bridge On the River Kwai, The One That Got Away, The Camp on Blood Island, Danger Within). While many of the films deal with the Army, the Navy is the focus in films like The Cruel Sea, Above us the Waves, and Battle of the River Plate, while the Air Force features in Angels One Five and Reach for the Sky. Spies and agents are the focus of Odette, Carve Her Name With Pride, Orders to Kill, and The Two-Headed Spy while historical figures are the main subject in Rommel-Desert Fox and I Was Monty’s Double.
