During Paige's daily stroll through the historical district, an unseen, icy hand suddenly grabs her by the ankle. Upon hearing her scream, the most handsome man in all of Colonial Williamsburg rushes to her rescue.
Orlando Blake, the dashing revolutionary reenactor Paige has adored from afar for months, tenderly comforts her. He says the attacker was Jackey; the harmless, if angry, ghost of a formerly enslaved woman.
After recovering from her initial terror, Paige finds herself hoping to help the lost, lonely spirit who suffered as a slave in life. She returns to Williamsburg after dark to search for Jackey. Orlando insists on tagging along so she won't be afraid.
Jackey appears and speaks with the two, and they gradually form a friendship. Paige enlists the help of another Williamsburg employee, a reenactor who portrays a slave, to help Jackey in her struggles to cross over. As a Black man, Anthony understands the pain Jackey has endured better than Paige and Orlando ever could.
As Paige's adoration for Orlando blossoms into love, she doubts the hugely popular, handsome playboy could ever fall for a plain woman like her. Meanwhile, Jackey and Anthony have fallen in love even though the veil between life and death separates them.
Is there any hope for a happy ending...for anyone?
