Freed as a young woman by the War Between the States when she was a child, her memories of living in bondage are as vivid as if they'd happened yesterday. Toby Young, a Pinkerton agent and a freeman of color, loves his job. Nobody notices servants, and so he is busy with cases all around the country. But when he lands in Whispering Pines to help an old friend prove a new friend innocent, he petitions the Pinkerton Agency to allow him to stay in Colorado. Besides, there is a certain woman who has attracted his attention.
