The book is set in a fantasy world on an Earth-like planet, seen through the eyes of a small Shepherd boy with a large sense of curiosity, which leads him out of his own peaceable world to be caught up in the very different and violent one of the Horsemen. He has many small adventures of his own, precipitated by his curiosity, within the much larger adventures of the Horsemen, which he does not really understand. These involve travel, a quest, a theft, a death and the hope of a return to his people.
