This textbook is one of the many titles that exist for a course in Mechanics of Materials. The content in the Mechanics of Materials text is a revision of a part of the content in a book titled Design Analysis of Structural Elements, which dates back to 2002. The textbook Design Analysis of Structural Elements was an integrated treatment of both Statics and Mechanics of Materials. However, it was too long and the students complained that it was too heavy. It also required a supplement for the homework exercises. Separate textbooks for Statics and Mechanics of Materials published in 2106, and were based largely on the content in Design Analysis of Structural Elements. Over the past decade several editions of both Statics and Mechanics of Materials have been published. The revisions and reorganization of the content was based on reactions of instructors and students. The organization of this edition of Mechanics of Materials was directed by Professor Michael Sutton, for his classes at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
