They gained valuable knowledge that has been preserved in their archeological remains as well as in their archaic legal systems. This type of knowledge was often rendered in symbolic dream-like language and images that modern scholars are not trained to understand. It is when we dream that we come closer to the mental universe of ancient peoples.
