In 1967, Margaret White, a housewife from the suburbs of Philadelphia, met Swami Sivananda Radha for the first time and something awakened within her. What follows is a transformative journey that takes her from Philadelphia to the Yasodhara Ashram in British Columbia and from housewife to sannyasi. In Durga’s Embrace: a Disciple’s Diary reveals the dynamic relationship between guru and disciple through the story of two extraordinary women: Swami Radha and Swami Durgananda. Swami Durgananda was a mother of three children when she met Swami Sivananda Radha. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and masters in Education in Philadelphia, she taught art for six years. Swami Durgananada is now the vice president of Yasodhara Ashram, where she lived and taught yoga for over 20 years.
