The story of the self-declared “ Mahdi” of Sudan, Muhammad Ahmad (1844-1885), “ restorer of faith, ” fundamentalist Islamic religious leader. His armies conquered the country, defeated several Egyptian and British armies and occupied Karthoum after a lengthy siege, beheading the British governor, General “ Chinese” Gordon in 1885.
