This portion of these Tales of the War begins following the evacuation of Little Rock in September 1863, and proceeds through the winter of 1863-1864. The highlight of the Chapter 1 is the little known Hog Expedition of January 1864, in which the Confederate cavalry scoured the Arkansas River bottom for hogs, cattle, sheep, and whatever animals they could find to feed the starving army, which was in winter camps. Chapter 2 brings to light the participation of the Arkansas and Missouri troops in the Red River Expedition of 1864. The final chapter of the this book covers the Camden Expedition from the time that the Union Army left Little Rock on March 23, until it returned to that city on May 2-3, 1864. This volume of the series is highly annotated, using a large number of sources, including every known modern work on the subjects presented. Included in this edition are several appendices with detailed Confederate Orders of Battle for the Battles of Pleasant Hill and Jenkins’ Ferry, as well as Orders of Battle for the lesser, though still significant actions at Poison Springs and Marks’ Mill. As in previous volumes, selected biographies are presented, with an assortment of correspondence from the principle personalities of the book, extended comments on the Red River and Camden Expeditions, plus a detailed index for easy reference.
