Tom Shipley’s War: Memoirs of a Weekend Warrior.

Tom Shipley was first introduced in The Innocence of Tom Shipley Teacher, Tom is an innocent, idealist reaching his maturity in the mid-1960s. He is dedicated, hardworking and loyal. His humorous escapades and wry observations give a very clear picture on what life was really like in Australia if you were part of the majority who did not involve themselves in the drug scene. This is historical fiction that is authentic despite no real names being used and characters painted as a blend of observed people. All incidents did occur, not necessarily in that location nor to those people. Both books are sensitively written in the style of Bill Bryson.Tom Shipley’s War takes place from 1964-7 after Tom managed to lose the ballot that called up the 19-20 year old boys (they could not vote, had not reached their majority, nor could they sign a contract or drink alcohol) for conscription to the Vietnam War. As a new teacher Tom had much to worry about, so had forgotten that he would be in the ballot based on birthdays. He would not be going to Vietnam, yet he saw the hate piled on those who did because their birthday was chosen. His rebellion was to join the CMF to protect Australia should we be invaded. Follow Tom as he starts his journey from raw recruit in the socially acceptable corps in the capital until he shines as a full Lieutenant.
