Sometimes the simplest spells are the most powerful.
Sibyl is the apprentice hotel witch at the splendid Grand Mirror Hotel.
She is busy each day drawing useful spell patterns to keep the hotel guests happy: spells to shine shoes, spells to remove dust and spells to return lost belongings like hats and gloves to their owners.
But Sibyl dreams of other possibilities - wonderful possibilities like her mother returning from the Black Mountains, and like Grandma letting her draw spell patterns from the Book of Advanced and Dangerous Magic.

Sibyl is a trainee witch at the Grand Mirror Hotel. She is still puddling around using the Book of Domestic Magic while the more advanced and highly desirous manual of the Book of Advanced and Dangerous Magic stays out of her reach. She would dearly love to be executing thrilling spells rather than magically but boringly straightening tablecloths and shining shoes, but her grandmother, the official hotel witch, won’t hear of it until Sibyl learns to concentrate better. When her grandmother disappears into last Tuesday, Sibyl is called upon to solve ‘big witch problems’!
Suddenly, the yearning for more responsibility is a daunting reality and yet she learns that the pressing urgency for resolutions can present opportunities for new perspectives and sometimes, gulp, concentration. This is a magical, fun tale with exciting imagery that allows the story to come alive. For ages 9–12.
