Trainor rightly contends in this thoughful and useful book that we can only advance beyond postmodernism’s important negative insights by invoking the metaphysical and the theological (John Milbank, University of Nottingham). This book provides a stunning and comprehensive analysis of post-secular society. It holds that God is the origin and the end of the ‘political’ and deals forthrightly and honestly with what many, especially secular liberals, would regard as the dangerously illiberal consequences of such a view. It is insighteful and challenging, forcing the reader to think about the deep spiritual crisis of our time, but it is an elegant anmd accessible manner and is in a clad of its own (Sushil Mittal, James Maddison University).
