In the German colonies in Africa, Heinrich suffers the loss of his parents and later his wife to war. Desperate to raise his son Klaus in peace, they settle in Berlin. When the Third Reich seize power he is once again caught up in the midst of devastating conflict.

Conscripted into the German army Klaus fights as a panzer commander in France and Holland leaving Heinrich to fear for his son's safety. The tables are turned when the advancing Russian forces surround the city and Klaus must find a way to rescue his father.
