Tiring of her repressed life on a country farm, teenage beauty Alice Graham runs away from home, seeking a new life for herself in New York in the Roaring Twenties. Calling herself Lucille Barry, she tries at first to find a job as a journalist, but has no success. When her money runs out and she is on the edge of despair, she is befriended by Maddie, a veteran of the Burlesque Theatre. The older woman takes her under her wing, and helps her to get established as a Burlesque star. But her beauty soon attracts the unwelcome attentions of a New York gangster, which begins a chain of events that ignites a powder keg of murder and ultimate tragedy...
