Claire has a good job in Guildford, is articulate and self-sufficient. Archie is an unemployed sculptor from America with no prospects. Claire loves Archie. She alone recognises his well-hidden talents. Archie thinks of Claire as his best friend, but nothing more. When an impatient driver crashes into a tree, Archie senses that from this he can create his perfect sculpture. The tree is delivered to his room, and there it remains, untouched. Archie then disappears without an explanation. Months pass. Encouraged by her best friend, Claire sets out to find Archie, a trip that takes her halfway across the world.
