Motoring in Mitteleuropa consists of extracts from the author's travel diaries to various central European countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. It focuses on castles and chateaux but also touches on towns, churches and restaurants. It does not pretend to be a modern Leigh Fermor or Pevsner. The author is a linguist and the work contains a number of linguistic jokes (some hidden). The word 'motoring' is slightly misleading: the author likes driving long distances but has no interest in cars and in fact cannot tell one from another. The friends with whom he travelled have, perhaps surprisingly, remained friends.
