Responding to ‘Mindfulness: Developing Agency in Urgent Times’ is a compilation of essays by researchers, innovators and thinkers that critically engage with the topics outlined in the Mindfulness Initiative’s Mindfulness: Developing Agency in Urgent Times publication.

This collection is a welcome example of the conversations that we need more of, and in ever greater depth across a broad range of interfaces within society - Jon Kabat-Zinn

2020 saw the publication and launch of a discussion document by MI Director Jamie Bristow, writer Rosie Bell, and researcher Dan Nixon. Mindfulness: Developing Agency in Urgent Times has been described as a landmark publication for the field, and explores the potential for mindfulness to underpin intentional action (or ‘agency’) in addressing complex societal and global challenges.

In order to continue this important conversation, we asked researchers, innovators and thinkers to submit a response to the document. We then invited a selection of contributors to develop their thoughts into short essays, which we have now published in a collection.

Responding to ‘Mindfulness: Developing Agency in Urgent Times is composed of 11 essays, each of which discusses different topics relating to the MI’s recent publication, such as how mindfulness training might need to evolve to better meet societal challenges, additional ways it might be vital for improving our relationships with technology, or how the mindfulness sector should focus on community and decolonisation to unlock its transformative potential.
