Ike Wagstaff, tired of getting nowhere in his job at a West Yorkshire Railway station, decides to try and find better prospects in London.
There he meets the love of his life, Lily, and thinks his life is complete, but life isn’t like that and hands him out a raw deal when Lily leaves him, with their four children.
Ike’s Father, Alf, travels to London and finds his son in dire straits and takes them all back to Leeds. There Ike has to recover and deal with his feelings towards Lily and also his sister Ede.
Ike struggles to get his life back together and just when it looks like he has, Lily turns up.
