After providing both aspiring and current teachers with suggestions, ideas and techniques to incorporate in their lessons with Outstanding Lesson Ahead , Amy Sargent’s new book provides students with tasks to stretch their thinking skills, develop their creativity and consolidate their learning, without being just more of the same work that they have already completed. Amy Sargent has identified that although teachers cater really well for SEN students, they do not necessarily provide the same support for G&T, or perhaps just the more able students. As a result, she has created the Challenge Club Passport. Selected members of the class have this passport in their books and must work through the challenges in there to stretch their learning and extend their thinking. Some involve challenges, which can be done in class, whilst others should be done as an extra-curricular activity, or at home. The students must provide clear, detailed evidence for each challenge, in order to get it signed off by the teacher, and a completed passport means rewards are earned. The passport is an easy way for students to challenge themselves without having to provide them with an extra task from the book or being the teacher’s helper because, let’s face it, that is more of a punishment than a reward. With the passport so readily available to students, there is no more Miiiiiiss, I’ve finished, what do I do now? which is always a bonus. They can simply choose a challenge and spend time working on it. It has proved very popular with her students, with middle and lower cohorts really pushing themselves in order to become part of the Challenge Club too!
