Bill Jacklin RA studied graphics in Walthamstow, London. He worked as a graphic designer before turning to painting in the early 1960s, studying at the Royal College of Art. Initially concerned with abstraction, in the mid-1970s Jacklin started to focus on figurative work, principally on depicting light and movement. Jacklin moved to New York in 1985. The city plays a starring role in many of his works, in particular his atmospheric images of ice skaters; his early training in graphics is evident in the bold, striking patterns he draws from the chaos of urban life. Encompassing a range of techniques, including etching and monoprints, Jacklin’s prolific output ranges from ‘urban portraits’ of the artist’s adopted home to snow scenes and seascapes that capture the elemental drama of nature. This authoritative collection is a masterclass in evoking atmosphere, movement and space through printmaking. AUTHOR: Nancy Campbell is a British artist and writer who specialises in work exploring polar and marine environments. She is the editor of Printmaking Today.
Jill Lloyd is a specialist in early twentieth-century German and Austrian art. Her publications include German Expressionism, Primitivism and Modernity (Yale University Press, 1991). SELLING POINTS: . The definitive collection of this New York based British artist’s evocative prints . Illustrated with many of the well-loved artist’s most famous works, such as his prints of ice skaters, as well as lesser-known, more intimate prints . Includes many of Jacklin’s ‘urban portraits’ of New York 120 illustrations
