Produced in association with the Scottish Seabird Centre, ‘Draw Your Own Encyclopaedia Scotland’s Seabirds’ provides an interesting, but educational, introduction to a variety of aspects of the lives of Scotland’s seabirds, along with quick facts, questions you can answer and, at the end, a pop quiz to test the knowledge which has been gained by reading this book. So far, this may seem like any other factual book, but unlike almost every other such book, children are allowed to draw in this one. In fact, they are actively encouraged to do so! Through this, they become the illustrator of their very own encyclopaedia chapter all about Scotland’s seabirds.

By engaging children in a variety of fun activities, such as drawing, answering questions and reading quick facts, this encourages them to take in and retain information without necessarily realising that they are engaged in learning. As well as being an educational activity book for children, this book is also a STEM resource for educators looking to provide biology-based fun classroom activities for their students. To aid with this, this book is supported by an optional educator’s licence that allows educators to legally photocopy its contents to create classroom hand-outs and suggestions for additional fun classroom activities to accompany them (available through the publisher’s website). In addition, the interactive nature of these books, and the need to search for suitable images online on which to base the required drawings for the book, provides the perfect starting point for discussing online safety, and how to judge the trustworthiness of information that can be found online.
