When the American Civil War began in 1861 it became of prime importance for the United Sates to seal off the Southern ports. The Southern Confederacy had few resources to prevent this happening, but tried very hard to make up the difference. The result was a bitter four year war on the sea in which the intrigues of foreign powers took a leading part. This is its story, a record of changing fortune and desperate effort.
