The Consolidated Vultee XP-92 was conceived as a Mach 1 plus point defence interceptor for the USAAF. It was initially planned to have a mixed rocket/turbojet power plant, but was cancelled by the new USAF. However, a single aircraft was built as the XF-92A research aircraft, which served with the USAF before being passed to NACA; being incorporated into that organizations High Speed Research Fleet. Although not attaining operational service, the XF-92A was a pioneering high speed delta wing flight research aircraft, paving the way for later delta wing interceptors and bombers such as the Convair F-012, F-106 and the supersonic B-58
