The Australian continent is filled with mysterious and beautiful examples of nature’s magnificent design at its best. Stories filled with mystique and ancient people have fascinated us for many decades. The original people have not only survived their harsh outback living but for thousands of years have thrived by preparing numerous natural plant remedies and foods. Use of essential oil-bearing plants is a major part of the aboriginal pharmacopoeia. The Tiwi people are the indigenous inhabitants of Bathhurst and Melville Island, just off the coast of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Tiwi people have used the Northern Pine, Callitris Intratropicu in various ways during their history. It is known that they used the wood for torches, ceremonial objects, musical sticks, spears, paddles and as a supply of firewood. The bark of the tree was used a medication for stomach upset. The cones were used for a medication for post-natal bleeding. The bark and leaves help to repel bugs and the ashes were used for human aches and pains. Since it was realised that the Northern Pine produced such valuable herbal remedies, the Tiwi people, together with the Australian Cypress Company, planted many trees in order to harvest these natural products. It was during these investigations that it was realised that the tree produced valuable blue oil which has a host of medical and cosmetic applications. New aqua coloured essential oil from the Northern Territory of Australia. Selected as the ‘Essence of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics’.
