Gather Round the Speakers: A History of the First Quarter of Somali Broadcasting 1941-1966

A record of Somali radio’s early years, from its beginnings in 1941, through to 1966 when it had become a highly successful and dynamic form of mass communication. The information was compiled using contemporary sources and interviews. The book presents the histories of both Radio Hargeisa and Radio Mogadishu, information on early presenters and artistes, and examples of evolving program schedules which themselves reflect something of contemporary social mores. It outlines the proposals for a broadcasting corporation which never happened but which may still have relevance for today’s period of reconstruction.
