Nga Tangata Taumata Rau 1901-1920

This volume presents, in the Maori language, the lives of 85 Maori in the first two decades of the 20th century. The Maori population grew significantly in these years and the ongoing struggle for the land and for self-determination is expressed here with a renewed sense of purpose. Through parliamentarians and traditional leaders, the Maori worked towards reversing some of the damage done in the era of war and confiscation. Prophets and new political movements clashed with Pakeha authorities, but the vision of, reformers like Peter Buck, Apirana Ngata and Te Puea Herangi did not falter. The book includes the lives of the famous such as the composer Paraire Tomoana and those who were less widely known outside their own descent group.
