Voices from the Land

Just as the Farmers’ Security Administration in the United States produced a major photographic essay during the thirties on the plight of farmers to raise public awareness, Voices from the Land reveals, through images by Jurgen Schadeberg, the harsh reality of the lives of many rural farm workers in South Africa. South Africa’s urban community and urbanites worldwide, mostly familiar with postcard versions of farm life, can now take a glimpse into the neglected world of rural life. Images are powerful tools in bringing about positive change and when complemented by evocative stories written by a team of committed writers, as in this book, the effect is even more intense.
