Zero Summer is a novel set in a Britain of the near future. It is a highly poetic account of an intense and explicitly erotic romance between two young people. They meet, make love and travel through the United Kingdom, heading for Cornwall. The world is moving towards a nuclear war: the story takes place during the arms build-up, the increased political tension and the deterioration of society. There are scenes of mass panic, riots, bombs, assassinations and mayhem. In some ways Zero Summer is like a disaster movie played out on both a global scale and between the young lovers. The couple encounter all sorts of odd characters on their action-packed journey to Cornwall, some involved in strange rituals, others looting, going crazy or heading for the hills. And a host of peculiar places, too: a dolphinarium, stone circles, a maze, a zoo, caves and tunnels. Jets scream overhead, missiles explode in the distance, killer whales splash in open-air swimming pools, the whole of British society is collapsing, and the lovers caress each other with the fever of nuclear angels.
