Anorexia nervosa, the most common although not the only eating disorder, is best summed up by the famous phrase fear of fatness and pursuit of thinness characterised by Hilde Bruch in her well-known book The Golden Cage. It is often accompanied by bulimia, although since this is such a secret disorder, sufferers rarely present with it.
