The Norwich Goulbourn Diaries

Edward Meyrick Goulburn

EDWARD MEYRICK GOULBURN was Dean of Norwich for 23 years (1866-89); he was a preacher, much sought after, and a prolific writer. He has strong ties to Norwich Cathedral: from the royalties earned from his books, he gave some GBP10,000 towards Cathedral restoration; he wrote the Biography and (with Henry Symonds, the Precentor) translated from Latin the Letters and Sermons of the Founder, Bishop Herbert de Losinga; he recorded the Nave Bosses in a very large volume; he gave the High Altar Rails; his wife, Julia, gave the Cathedral Clock. After his retirement, the Presbytery Pulpit was given in his memory, and he himself gave the Nave Pulpit. Not least, he fought for two years to prevent the Lynn and Fakenham Railway running a line through the Close. This edited version of the 10 Goulburn Norwich Diaries, together with a brief Biography, give a picture of the character and activities of a Victorian Dean, and of the life of Cathedral and City, during the years 1867-87.
