The Pickering Masters Works of Charles Babbage is the first and only collected edition of all the known works of this major thinker. Texts have been edited by an expert to reflect the development of the many facets of Babbage’s work. For easy reference, volumes are arranged by genre, so that Babbage’s work on mathematics, table-making and calculating engines, science, technology, inventions and his writing on economics and statistics, theology and politics, is grouped together, in chronological order within each volume where appropriate. The edition includes the major works, papers and articles and writings privately printed or published only as pamphlets as well as works directly influenced by Babbage, including Menabrea’s incisive account of the Analytical Engine, translated and annotated by the Countess of Lovelace. Contemporary articles, notes and writings vital to Babbage scholarship, by scholars such as JFW Herschel, D Lardner and BH Babbage on the calculating engine, are also included.
