Doorstep Wilderness

Paul Hughes

This astonishing collection of photographs chronicles the wildlife in our nation’s capital along the River Dodder. Despite the density of houses, office blocks and commuter traffic, the creatures survive in small areas of green. The riverbanks support a wide variety of trees and vegetation, home to many birds and small mammals. The great drama and peril in this urban environment are superbly depicted. Waterfowl cautiously feed from the riverbank and aquatic vegetation. In turn, they and their vulnerable offspring are hunted by the ever-present predators, the fox and grey heron, while the otter hunts for fish. The photographs, taken mostly on the River Dodder, explore the startling change in the circle of life as it unfolds through the four seasons and plays out between the wild creatures that reside on our doorstep.
