Sir Thomas Malory’s classic telling of the Legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is a cornerstone of English Literature, and has captured the imagination of generations. Mike Poulton’s adaptation brings the familiar and not-so-familiar tales of Britain’s first great epic to spectacular theatrical life.
The adventure begins with the pulling of the magic sword from the stone, moves on to the establishment of the Round Table and the Quest for the Holy Grail, and ends with the death of the ‘once and future king’. Woven through the narrative is the great love story of Launcelot and Guenever.
This stage adaptation of Morte D'Arthur was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, in June 2010.
‘Grandeur and pathos, foxy cameos and fine jokes… a beautifully judged text by Mike Poulton, simplifying but drawing the archaic beauty from Malory’s 1485 book’
- The Times
‘As poignant and emotive as any Shakespeare history play’
- Evening Standard
