The lazy rooster and the mischievous mouse can’t be bothered to help the Little Red Hen tend her ear of wheat. They can’t be bothered to help her take it to the miller either, or bake it into bread. But when her loaf of warm, fragrant bread is ready, the Little Red Hen is not at all inclined to share it with them. The Rooster and the mouse soon mend their ways. This lively version of the classic tale is given contemporary treatment with dynamic, textured illustrations which consist of collage hung wires and then photographed by artist Kate Slater. AGES: 3 to 7 AUTHOR: Mary Finch has worked in children’s book publishing and as a freelance editor, and currently works as a bookseller and copy editor. In addition to The Little Red Hen, she has also written The Three Billy Goats Gruff for Barefoot Books. She enjoys theatre and gardening, and is interested in architectural history, literature and politics. Mary has two daughters and two grandchildren and lives in Bath, UK. Kate Slater creates her collaged artwork in a studio called The Apple Room, where she keeps lots of boxes and shelves full of paper. The studio is next to the farmhouse in Staffordshire, England, where she lives with her family, her dog, chickens, two pet sheep and lots of cows. In addition to creating children’s books, Kate also makes book covers and illustrates magazine articles. She finds her inspiration in books, galleries and the beautiful countryside she sees when she goes to bring the cows in. SELLING POINTS: . Literacy Market: Repetitive text allows young children to join in with the refrains on each page. . Cooperation: Promotes the importance of working together and shows what can be achieved through hard work . Farm to Table: Clearly illustrates the process of creating bread from wheat, and includes easy-to-follow bread recipe for young readers.
