Illustrated history of the City of Waterford from the Vikings to the present day. This book traces the development of Waterford City from its foundation by the Vikings to the present day. It looks at the social and economic history of the area, covering the significant events such as the marriage of Strongbow and Aoife, Catholic Emancipation, the Famine and the Pig Buyers Strike of the 1890s, as well as looking at some lesser- known episodes such as the creation of the cream cracker by Jacobs and the filming of Barry Lyndon. It also includes biographies of notable figures such as Peter Lombard, Philip Lond and Rosamund Jacob as well as the impressions of visitors to the city such as Frederick Douglas and William Makepeace Thackery. AUTHOR: Ian Manning, who lives in Waterford, is a post- graduate history student at University College Cork. His previously published work include reviews for the Journal of the Waterford Historical and Archaeological Society and articles on Waterford’s forgotten heroes for www.hidden-gems.eu 50 b/w illustrations
