In February 2005, the Music Sales Group presented a concert of music for violin at the Wigmore Hall, London to launch the Wigmore Hall New Music Fund, set up to promote the commissioning and performance of new works for that important international recital venue. Of the many pieces featured at the concert, four were world premieres, by Craig Armstrong, John Tavener, Joby Talbot and Judith Weir. With these, two of the other composers played, Richard Rodney Bennett and Witold Lutoslawski, are also represented by pieces in this new collection for violin with piano accompaniment. Although most of the contents could be considered contemporary, the works have been carefully selected for inclusion for their accessibility, aimed at violinists of broadly moderate attainment, from the elementary grades (1st - 3rd position only) to work that is more adventurous but of limited duration. Here you will find many of the greatest names in music of our time writing works of inimitable character for the greatest and most expressive of solo instruments, music that will become ever more appreciated as it is more often heard.
