Book Review

Shadow Fox
by Carlie Sorosiak

by Claire Atherfold, Jul 2024

This is a good story. There are foxes in it. It’s a straightforward fact that our narrator Shadow shares with us as we begin. She isn’t biased either, of course, she is simply a vixen that loves shoes and doesn’t like people. Except perhaps Nan, because Nan gives her fish, but only because of this has Nan endured. Then Nan goes missing and is replaced by a girl. What is this girl doing where Nan should be? And she doesn’t even have any fish for Shadow! Intolerable.

But there is something about this girl, this girl called Bee; she creates a warm feeling in Shadow’s belly and there are also the strange, enchanted things that start to occur, like delicious soup appearing out of thin air, right when Shadow is hungry. Are these events linked to the girl somehow?

Set on the shores and endless waters of Lake Superior, once again, just as she did in her previous bestseller, I, Cosmo, Carlie Sorosiak uses her talents to weave to life the inner workings and viewpoint of an animal mind, sharing Shadow’s wild nature, her loneliness, her sass and her strength. The result is a tale that deals with loss as well as discovering how to trust in others and yourself, all sprinkled with a touch of magic. For ages 7+.
