Mike is not as young as he used to be. His dodgy knee and sedentary lifestyle don’t help, but he and his wife, Caroline, have a comfortable life together. He is a writer of popular fiction and she works part time at a gallery in town.

With few friends and an inability to drive, Mike relies on the his closeness to his cat and regular visits from a boring neighbour to make sure Caroline isn’t his only contact in the world.
